We are pleased to invite you to join us for a special 3T event at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), where you will hear from researchers specialising in healthy ageing and the brain, followed by a tour of the research labs.

QBI is home to 250 researchers striving to improve the world's understanding of how the brain works in health and disease, and how we can prevent, treat or ultimately cure brain disorders, diseases and injuries.

During this 3T event, you will hear from Dr Daniel Blackmore on healthy ageing and Dr Gerhard Leinenga on scanning ultrasound as a potential treatment for dementia, before touring the facility.

Time: 9:45am for 10am–12pm

  • Presentations: 10–11am
  • Morning tea: 11–11:30am
  • Tour: 11:30am–12pm
Presenters

Dr Daniel Blackmore
Dr Daniel Blackmore is a senior post-doctoral research fellow in the Bartlett Laboratory at QBI. His research is focused on the ageing brain and developing approaches to slow or even reverse cognitive decline. Dr Blackmore was one of the first to discover the age-associated decrease in neural stem cells. These stem cells are critical as they are able to generate new neurons which are essential for the formation of new memories.

Dr Gerhard Leinenga
Dr Gerhard Leinenga is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research. His research is focussed on using ultrasound to treat Alzheimer’s disease. This method uses microbubbles to bypass the blood-brain barrier, then utilises ultrasound waves to vibrate the microbubbles and activate microglia, resulting in amyloid beta aggregates being dismantled in diseased Alzheimer’s brains.

Parking and transport:
