Welcome to The Connector

Welcome to the Summer edition of The Connector!

This year has seen enormous and exciting change at the University, beginning in January when Professor Paul Greenfield AO became Vice-Chancellor. Throughout 2008 Professor Greenfield has met many alumni in South East Asia, China and Hong Kong, and in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Meeting and speaking with alumni is a priority for Professor Greenfield, and in February the UQ Alumni team will be in touch with news of international and Australian-based events for alumni and friends next year.

Throughout 2009, the UQ Alumni team will provide opportunities for you to engage with the University in some way. In particular, I encourage you to apply for University awards that recognise alumni for the following - their work in equity and diversity (nominations for the Alumni Equity and Diversity Awards open in February); Young Alumnus of the Year (nominations open in June for an award which recognises the outstanding achievements of alumni under 35 years of age); and International Alumnus of the Year (nominations open in June for this award which honours alumni living overseas who are making outstanding contributions to their profession or community).

Would you like more news about alumni, our students or activities on campus? Are your interests cultural, intellectual or social? I invite you to participate in the short survey you'll find at the end of this newsletter, which will help you to inform us about ways in which we can improve the design and content of The Connector.

Wishing you and your families the very best for the festive season.

Lea Sublett
Deputy Director, Alumni & Community Relations

Arts Graduates 1958 and earlier reunion

The Faculty of Arts hosted a morning tea at The University of Queensland’s Art Museum on November 22, 2008 to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the Bachelor of Arts graduates of 1958 and earlier. Over 30 Arts alumni revisited UQ to celebrate this significant achievement. They were joined by a number of Arts Faculty staff.

Attendees received a warm welcome from Executive Dean, Professor Richard Fotheringham, who reminded the audience of other significant and important world events that took place at that time – Sputnik, the publishing of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel Lolita and Elvis Presley’s induction into the US Army. Professor Fotheringham then introduced the morning’s key speaker, Dr Dan Blackmore, from UQ's Queensland Brain Institute, who talked about how exercise keeps your brain healthy. Visit the Arts Faculty website for more stories about this event and some wonderful pictures.
