Youngest CoralWatch ambassador interviewed on ABC's 'War on Waste'

At just 10 years old, Elijah Richardson has made some serious waves in ocean conservation. Here at UQ, we were thrilled to hear that Elijah was recently interviewed for the ABC television series, War On Waste.

Helping to wage the war on waste, Elijah told presenter Craig Reucassel about his ideas and projects to save the reef from plastic.

Armed with a passion to save the oceans, Eiljah's ocean quest has seen him become pen pals with Sir David Attenborough, and he also managed to convince singer-songwriter Billie Eilish to let her song Ocean Eyes be used in a CoralWatch campaign about reef conservation.

"If we do make change now, and not in a couple of years' time - now - we might have a chance to restore our wildernesses, our amazing oceans and our clear beautiful skies," Elijah said.

Most recently, Elijah was part of the CoralWatch crew at UQ’s Regional Roadshow alumni weekend at UQ's Heron Island Research Station, with CoralWatch project manager Diana Klein and UQ Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Deborah Terry AO.

Established in 2002, CoralWatch is a citizen-science program based at UQ. Ambassadors and volunteers work to monitor and protect the health of coral reefs around the world through education and outreach.
