News from the Vice-Chancellor
UQ alumni and partners to gain from new management structure.
A top-level reorganisation at The University of Queensland will target better links with alumni, schools and industry.
The new executive management model positions the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Greenfield, to be more active in UQ's external relations strategies – which he prioritised after becoming Vice-Chancellor in January.
"The new model will take effect early in 2009 when Mr Douglas Porter and Professor Trevor Grigg finish many years of exemplary service as Secretary and Registrar and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development), respectively," Professor Greenfield said.
"The re-organisation takes account of dramatic changes at UQ over the past decade. Our operating budget is now more than $1 billion, we have almost 6000 staff and 38,000 students, and we have never been so involved with international networks.
"The new structure will enable me and my senior management colleagues to pay more attention to alumni and to other essential partners, such as schools, industry, non-government organisations and government."

Alumni Court renovations completed
As a priority of the campus enhancement program, The University of Queensland recently completed the $1.7 million renovation of the Alumni Court.
The Alumni Court upgrade, near the Parnell Building, involved providing disabled access into the Great Court and the adaptive re-use of an old physics laboratory.
It has also provided a place for students and staff to gather and communicate in a relaxed environment.
UQ Property & Facilities Maintenance Manager Kevin O'Sullivan said “students and staff can remain on task via the area's wireless network, while utilising the court's open-planned grassed area, specially-designed seating and undercover facilities.”

Neo-goth: black in black launch
The Neo-goth: back in black exhibition was launched in July, with record numbers of visitors during its three months at the UQ Art Museum. Exhibition curator Alison Kubler said she crossed the country to assemble the exhibition and was surprised by the scope and strength of Gothic-themed pieces being produced by artists. The resurgence in gothic culture was evident from the 600 black-clad guests who attended the opening, where blood-red food was served and gothic-themed music was spun by DJ Coffin Boffin. Many of the guests were UQ Arts alumni from the eighties, who had the opportunity to relive some of their black-clad youth.
The exhibition incorporated 170 works from 60 contemporary artists. Both floors of the UQ Art Museum were filled with Gothic-inspired sculpture, film, photography, painting and jewellery for the duration of the exhibition, with a weekend of free talks by several of the artists.
Contributors to Neo-goth included Venice Biennale representative Shaun Gladwell, photo-artist Rosemary Laing and winner of the University’s inaugural National Artists Self-Portrait Prize, Ben Quilty, who created a number of pieces for the exhibition.
The exhibition also featured for the first time in Queensland the work of 2008 Archibald Prize winner, Del Kathryn Barton.
