2008 Chancellor's Fund Appeal

Since 1910, The University of Queensland has educated more than 170,000 students and has also become an international centre for research, attracting staff and students from across the world. Private philanthropy has helped transform UQ in recent decades and, with your support, we will continue to achieve our international teaching and research aspirations.

In 2008, the University has allocated a special fund to match first-time gifts, increasing the impact of your support to the area you choose.
As a first-time donor to UQ, up to $150 of your 2008 gift will be matched dollar for dollar.
This year, the University has also established The Chancellor's Society to recognise donors who make an annual gift of $1,000 or more.

The Power of Discovery   The Power of Learning   The Power of Engagement

Targeting disease – Motor neuron disease (MND) is a group of disorders which causes muscle wasting and the loss of nerve cells that control speech, swallowing and respiration. In Australia, one person dies from MND every day. Dr Robyn Wallace and her team hope to discover new treatments for this disease. Mr Peter Goodenough made this research possible by bequeathing more than $6 million to UQ to help find a cure for MND.

Investing in the future – Mr James Broadhurst created a scholarship for visually impaired students in memory of his daughter Kym, a UQ graduate. The current Kym Broadhurst scholarship holder, Amanda Acutt, is achieving impressive results in her Arts/Law program. ”I am encouraged by the fact that there are people out there who believe I can succeed,” Miss Acutt said. Mr Broadhurst said he was thrilled the scholarship he created in his daughter’s memory was helping students like Amanda.

Leveraging opportunity – Laureate Professor Peter Doherty AC, a patron of the University’s capital campaign for the School of Veterinary Science, cites his early education at UQ as the basis for his medical research achievements and believes in the importance of quality education for others. “Training in veterinary science at The University of Queensland opened out the world of biology for me and my subsequent path to the Nobel Prize. It is important that these same opportunities should be available to our young people and I give this campaign my total support.”

Your gift to RESEARCH funds investigations with the potential to impact locally, nationally and internationally.

Your gift to SCHOLARSHIPS will transform lives by providing education, opportunity and confidence.

Your gift to the University’s CAPITAL CAMPAIGN for the School of Veterinary Science will contribute to animal health and welfare, food safety and biosecurity.
